Vakula Matha Temple

The Vakula Matha Temple, located on the Peruru Banda hillock near Tirupati, is a significant and revered Hindu temple with a deep connection to the Tirumala Temple. It is dedicated to Vakula Devi, the foster mother of Lord Venkateswara (Balaji).

History and Legend

The temple's history is steeped in Hindu mythology. According to legend, Vakula Devi is a reincarnation of Yashoda, the foster mother of Lord Krishna. In her previous life, Yashoda expressed her regret that she was unable to witness Lord Krishna's marriage. Lord Krishna promised her that she would have that opportunity in his next incarnation in the Kali Yuga. In this life, Yashoda was reborn as Vakula Devi. She was the one who nurtured Lord Venkateswara and arranged his celestial marriage with Goddess Padmavathi. The temple is a beautiful symbol of the unconditional love between a mother and her son. The idol of Vakula Devi is positioned to face the Tirumala hills, from which she can have a continuous darshan (view) of her son, Lord Venkateswara.

A unique and cherished tradition of the temple is that the naivedyam (food offering) is first offered to Vakula Devi and then to Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala. Priests at the Vakula Matha temple ring a large bell to signal that the offering has been made to the mother, after which the offerings are then made to the Lord at the Tirumala temple. The temple, which is now administered by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), has undergone significant renovations in recent years.
